Tata Motors Introduces the Punch EV with Futuristic Design and Advanced Features
Tata Motors unveiled the all-electric Punch in India last week, and we now have a fixed launch date of January 17. Tata's fourth all-electric model is the first to be built on the company's new Gen 2 EV architecture, acti.ev (read active). Bookings are already beginning for a nominal fee of Rs 21,000.
Punch EV receives two battery and charging options.
- expected to have a range between 300 and 400 kilometers.
- The design is inspired by the Nexon EV.
- Tata Punch EV's Exterior Design
Among all Tata EVs, the Punch EV has the largest design differentiation from its ICE cousin. The front end is definitely inspired by the Nexon EV, and it resembles a scaled-down version of it. There's a new full-width LED light bar, a split headlamp design with trapezoidal housing for the main cluster, and a front bumper with a faux silver skid plate. The side profile and back end remain mostly unchanged, although there are new alloy wheels and a dual-tone rear bumper. It is also the first Tata electric vehicle to include a trunk.
Tata Punch EV Interior and Features
Tata has yet to provide a detailed look at the Punch EV's inside, but there will be significant modifications there. It will have an all-new 10.25-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster, a redesigned two-spoke steering wheel, and a jeweled rotary drive selector in the center console. A teaser graphic on Tata's website reveals an all-new HVAC control panel with toggle switches and haptic buttons, similar to the Nexon EV.
The top-spec Punch EV will include a 360-degree camera, leatherette seats, an automatic parking brake with auto hold, linked car technology, a wireless charger, heated front seats, cruise control, a sunroof, and the new Arcade.ev app suite. Some of these characteristics are unique for a vehicle of this size.
Tata Punch EV Battery and Range
The Punch EV's full technical specifications are not yet available, but we do know it will be available in two variants: Standard and Long Range, with 25kWh and 35kWh battery packs, respectively, as previously reported.
The former only receives a 3.3kW AC charger, whilst the latter also gets a 7.2kW AC charger that supports DC rapid charging.
The new acti.ev modular platform is estimated to have a range of 300-600 kilometers, depending on the model and battery. So, with the Punch EV, a range of 300-400 kilometers appears reasonable. The platform takes a significant step forward from the Gen 1 architecture and receives significant improvements over the ICE platform, which can be read here.
The Tata Punch EV is aimed directly at the Citroen eC3. It will be positioned between the Tiago EV MR and the Nexon EV MR, with pricing ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 13 lakh ex-showroom.
